CARBON BLACKS - Learn to make charcoal-based painting inks and drawing media from foraged materials
with artists Emma Cowan and Sarah Nicholson, from Wild Studios
Discover the satisfying craft of making your own charcoal for drawing and painting in this immersive one-day workshop.
Using foraged plant materials, you will learn how to create artists' charcoal and transform this into a range of beautiful, functional and expressive art materials.
Firstly, we will explore suitable raw materials and show you how to make a simple kiln. You will learn how to make a variety of drawing sticks, including a process for creating smudge-proof and waterproof charcoal sticks for mixed media work. You will also make a wooden charcoal stick holder. Weather permitting, we will light an outdoor camp fire to heat our charcoal kiln during the lunch break.
We will then show you how to turn handmade charcoal into rich black inks using natural binders, creating painting inks that are versatile, archival, and full of character. We will explore various options for binders, including a recipe for all-natural glossy, water-resistant ink.
There will be plenty of time to experiment with the materials, exploring the effects of different binders, intensities, and application techniques.
Working with charcoal-based media connects you to the earliest of artists. These materials are incredibly versatile in their expressive qualities, and through the process of gathering and preparing the materials yourself, you strengthen your relationships to the natural environment.
By the end of the day, you will take home a small collection of artists' drawing charcoals in a tin, a charcoal stick holder, and carbon black ink, along with the practical knowledge to continue the processes yourself using materials from your own environment.
Morning tea will be provided, along with all the materials for the day.
